Fire Safety

Myschievians love fire, but we hate to get burned. For this reason, we ask that ALL participants familiarize themselves with the Fire Safety guidelines below and in the Survival Guide. Enjoy the flame, but respect it!

All Rangers are trained in basic fire safety, so when in doubt about anything fire related please ask a Ranger.

Burn Ban

In the case that Cass County issues a burn ban, no open uncontained fires will be permitted PERIOD. If a ban is in effect, you will be informed by the greeters when you arrive. This means that the effigy will not be burned either, but don't worry, we'll find another creative way to safely dismantle it.

NO FIREWORKS!

Got it? Good!

Campfires, Fire Pits, and Burn Barrels

You must contact a Ranger or LLC member for approval and for information on required safety precautions. Make sure you have nothing within a 15-foot radius of any fire pit or burn barrel. You must also have an overhead clearance of no less than 20 feet. Bring a fire extinguisher and a shovel to put out any fires in case of emergency.

DO NOT LEAVE FIRES UNATTENDED!

Fire Performance

All fire performers, from the professional fire-breather to the backyard poi spinner, must review and be able to answer questions about the Fire Performance Safety by American Fire Artists, LLC document if they plan to light up at Myschievia. You can download it by clicking the link, or get a copy from the Rangers at the event.

Burnable Art

All Art to be burned needs to be registered and approved by the LLC before the event. We prefer that you not use large amounts of plywood in your art b/c of problems with controlling the ember showers it creates. Burnable Art may be banned in the case of inclement wind and weather. Register your art!

Cigarette Butts

Do not put cigarettes out on the ground! This can be just as hazardous as the big fires we have. Bring a portable ashtray like an Altoids tin for your butts. If you are seen dropping butts on the ground repeatedly you can be kicked out of the event.
