Model of the Tree of Life made with Starburst candy, by Caleb
Here in North Texas, our effigy team builds the base and the participants contribute the art.
In 2007, the "UnrulyMan" effigy was a giant head with a moveable jaw, and participants decorated all sorts of crazy hair to be planted in his bald head.
In 2009, the effigy team built a Flower Pot, and participants created many beautiful flowers.
In 2010, the effigy team built an Ark, and participants made animals. But because of the burn ban, some animals didn't make it to the Ark.
This year, for the Tree of Life, you have a choice: a Branch, or a Tree Creature. Or do both!! The effigy team is building the tree trunk out of recycled materials. The 2x4 "limbs" you see sticking out of the top will be prepared to receive branches:

We've heard all kinds of interesting Branch ideas, from branches made of sock puppets to a "Thank You MEATs" branch made of old wooden crutches. And we can't wait to see Mister Powers' Branch concept come to life:

Some people are also recycling the animals that didn't make it to last year's Ark and turning them into Tree Creatures.
The landowners have asked that we only construct our Branches and Tree Creatures with non-toxic materials, so below is a list that will help you to make safe art that will NOT spew toxic fumes or sparks on our lovely Myschievians. Any questions about making animals may be directed to art@ntxb.org.
One last thing: This summer has been VERY hot, and there is a chance of a burn ban (again!! booo!!). In the even of a burn ban, you MUST make arrangements to bring your art home with you. The landowners will not permit art to be left on the property, and the Earth Guardians will be very displeased and rain down their fury if our Tree of Life becomes MOOP. So enjoy the creative process, but come prepared just in case! We can't wait to see what the Tree of Life will grow!
